Epilogue

Canadian Adventure Epilogue

Well it has been a couple of days home now and we are just started to feel “at home” again. The house feels big and there is a lot of stuff inside. It takes more than two steps to make coffee in the morning. The dog is wondering why we aren’t driving anywhere and where the hell are her Timbits at coffee time!!!

Of course we missed our children, family and friends but we are missing our life on the road, that bodes well for our next adventure. Talks have been started of what modifications are needed to Rattletrap to go south to Baja!! First of all we need Kevan to have surgery and heal (my thought was he could do that in the warm air) alas perhaps I should just go back to work to prepare the bank accounts again!!

Looking at a montage of pictures last night with the parents and realizing just how far we travelled was awesome! The symbols of our country from coast to coast such as Maple syrup, beavers, the maple leaf, hockey sticks and these are usually found on the side of buildings called gift shops!!

Things at the beginning of our journey that we made fun of such as KOA campgrounds, CBC radio, Canadian Tire (I’ll never have them work on my vehicle), & BC Ferries. They are now not so bad amazingly!!

So in the end for me 77 days on the road & Kevan had been gone 85 days.

We put on 19769 kms throughout our journey in total.

Only thirteen nights not in the motor home.

So adventure with best friend (Kevan) and man’s best friend (Ryanne)

PRICELESS!!!

Maple Ridge to Victoria

Kevan Takes Four Ladies to Dinner!!

After a great dinner with friends in Summerland the next morning we continued our trek down to the lower mainland to stay in Maple Ridge. Females surrounded poor Kevan for the evening after he bought Chinese food!! Kids and dogs oh my! (Ryanne visited her mother and sister). It was a beautiful sunny day and the traffic was minimal for a change. A nice picnic in Manning Park and still Rattletrap is an attention getter!

The next morning we set off through the ugly traffic towards the ferry!! Kevan hates Vancouver traffic to start with and we both are having mixed feelings about heading home. Don’t doubt our love for our family and friends but we are having a blast (I truly think a better time than either of us expected in some ways).   Through the heart of the beast and the weather is rolling in a thick fog (oh so much more fun in traffic). Trying for the 11:00 ferry to Victoria but probably will be on the 1:00. Alas the ferry is late and finally works in our favour for a change and little ole Rattletrap rolled on board!!

Our last official night away, and in the happy home our long-time friends the Bonkowski’s. Home-cooked meal, old stories of days gone past, plans for the future (they are soon to be first-time grandparents!!) final send-off breakfast and north to Nanaimo we go!

Friends New and Old!!

We Are So Lucky!!

With our adventure coming to a close shortly (definitely not our last) we have been able to stay with both new and old friends on our journey from Alberta to BC. A wonderful stay in Airdrie Alberta with Don and Carol. Guest host of Zoe the dog. It was definitely different being the “hosties” vs. the hosts. A wonderful stay to be continued at our house at a later date!!!

Then off to Canmore, Alberta to stay with Nevil and Michelle. Garagiritias for the men in the man cave beside the four motorcycles sitting in lawn chairs!! A beautiful drive in the sun down to Summerland to stay with old friends and family for the night. Lots of fog down south which sounds similar to Nanaimo by the news.

Kevan, Karen and Ryanne

PS the Calgary Zoo is still fun even partially open!!

Regina to Lethbridge

Moose Jaw who knew??

Well finally out of Ontario, yay!!! Yet alas the thermostat is still high!!!! What can it be!!! Well the moral of the story is that trust your gut!! Kevan had suspected the thermometer from the beginning but had been told by two different technicians that it couldn’t possibly be this. So defer to the professionals (doctors, lawyer and mechanics) you say. So in the snow showers in the campground in the dark Kevan changed the damn thermostat ($5.00 piece) and lo and behold SHE IS CURED!!!!

HAPPY HAPPY KEVAN!!!!!

To Regina overnight in a hotel for a change and Chinese food for dinner. Went to the RCMP museum and then off to Moose Jaw.

So Moose Jaw is a great little town with lots to do. We went on an underground tour of the Capone era that was fascinating. Found a great little campground for the night.

Stayed with Kevan’s cousins’ daughter and her husband in Lethbridge the next night, which was great!! Three dogs in the house was fun. Beautiful clear cold night but no snow. It’s predicted for two nights later (will be headed out first).

Getting closer to BC we have to get through Alberta first!!!

In Regina

Part of the Adventure they say!!??

Well luckily after the long weekend stay in Thunder Bay Rattletrap gained a new radiator after we walked around the “business district” of town for nearly two hours. Saw the abandoned rail cars, grain elevators, and a high concentration of rental properties (including guard dogs)!! So off we go trundling down Trans-Canada refreshed to find the elusive campground. Alas a lovely one found in Dryden owned by a German couple. Dinner in the sunshine and its midway through October what could go wrong you say!!!??

Early start due the time change, up and on the road, it’s another beautiful day. Thinking about coffee in Kenora but decided to go around on the bypass route. We met Adam, Amber and eventually Michelle. Ever so grateful to all and thank-yous will be sent!!

So there are  a few things that a wife will always jump at when your husband states emphatically, grab the fire extinguisher I’m pulling over fast I see smoke, and grab the dog!!! OK so this is a good reason to know where all safety supplies are kept (I did). Needless to say it was a fast exit luckily there was room on the roadside and not much traffic due to the early hour of 1000.

Thankfully there was no fire only smoke as we caught it in time, and found one of transmission hoses split beyond fixing and puking fluid everywhere!! So we are well prepared for most things except catastrophic failures and a hose we don’t have. So as Kevan was surveying the scene I did what any wife would do- held the dog and flagged down an OPP sergeant (Adam) whom was driving by. Thankfully he called THE ONLY TOWING COMPANY IN THE REGION on his cell because neither of ours worked in this spot!! Nice to know after the fact it’s a huge dead-zone.

So after a chilly wait for the tow as she (Amber) was towing cars from a huge drug raid going down we were off, not before another officer stopped as well.

Small town, many mechanics and it took twelve calls of “sorry to busy to look” or they couldn’t bother with us, it started to look like we would be fixing her in a back alley, I was thinking I would be on the ground following Kevan directions as his shoulder is quite painful lately. At least it wasn’t snowing right? Alas Amber to the rescue at the local Canadian Tire (Michelle) and after some pleading we were in “sometime” today. Dropped at 1200ish out the door at 430 with the new @#(*&^  $3.00 hose attached!!!

Down the same road again, sigh of relief as we passed the puddle on the road.

Exhausted but wanting out of Kenora we made it to a sweet campground in Prawda Manitoba. GOOD BYE ONTARIO!!!

Things to note:

Always be nice to the police as they are handy!/Women tow-truck drivers’ rock!

Read the road signs to know where you are!/Don’t diss Canadian Tire some are great!

McD’s coffee in a pinch is good!/Always have AAA!

Thanksgiving Weekend

Holy Wind Gusts!!!

If Rattletrap were a sailboat we would have been across the prairies already! Another sunny and really warm day today. Off to a slow start today as we were going to The Canadian Bush plane & Heritage centre for what is supposed to be an awesome experience. Museum? Well that’s just up our alley!!  Apparently “hands-on” displays- that’s always fun no matter what age you are. Arrive through the maze of one-way streets around the waterfront with some of the traffic lights not working to find the museum looking closed. Damn!! Kevan checked it out and finds that they too have no power but come right in and pay on the way out. So with the museum to ourselves we wander around the large amount of displays. Unfortunately, no power means no video display, no 3-D firefighter movie, & no flight simulator!!!

It ended up a short day landing in Wawa again in the same campground to rest-up, laundry and re-fuel with groceries. Nice roast beef, mashed potatoes with gravy and fresh veggies. Got to eat right!!!

Landed in Thunder Bay the next night. Seems we may be here a couple days though. Rattletrap has been running warm and Kevan suspects the original radiator may be the culprit. So here we sit until the long weekend is over and businesses are open again. Rolled over 230000 on the odometer (I guess she deserves another radiator). Happy Thanksgiving to all!!

Heading West

Heading West towards the Motherland!

Well it appears that we are heading homeward now as we have stayed in the same place twice. The lovely KOA in Sturgeon Falls. The owner remembered little Rattletrap and us when we were registering and wanted to hear of our adventures. It took half and hour at least before we set up camp (to busy talking).

Beautiful evening as we ate dinner outside in the sun (21C) and watched the sunset from the dock on the river.

While enjoying our drive west we had to stop and take the picture of the largest nickel in Sudbury of course, and ended up touring the museum. Another underground tour. This time of a copper and nickel mine.

Alas more road construction, which will end, I believe when we are home in our driveway. I will have bright orange sign flashbacks!! Friday of a long weekend with good weather bodes for lots of traffic towards cottage country so we are trying to make tracks this afternoon. Unfortunately we are a little tired today so when the next KOA sign arose from the side of the road out came the KOA bible (info book of all KOA’s in the land) and yes they are open until the 15th!! So exit highway and into 74 acres of KOA-land. Which includes all human amenities (including Wifi) but caters to our four-legged pets. They have their own agility park (balls included), wash station, grooming station, private off leash park (KAMP K-9), and dog-walking services!!!! OMG!!!!

Karen, Kevan and Ryanne

PS- She got the complimentary biscuit upon check-in again!!

Montmagny, Quebec

Snow Geese Festival in Montmagny, Quebec

After a day of driving from Fredericton we are in Montmagny, Quebec for the night. We had stayed the night before at a nearly deserted campground, ok there were about three units there overnight. Honestly tried to pay the camp fee both that night and in the morning unfortunately there was nobody home to take the fees. So with free hot showers this am after the torrential downpour once again we were off like a herd of turtles!!!

So Montmagny apparently loves geese due to the large number of signs, posters, duck carvings, and businesses with “geese” included in the name. So we are going to miss the annual snow goose festival, which is quite the shindig!! Not to worry though we were serenaded all night (I guess they don’t need to sleep) there were thousands of them on the beach next door!

Can really see the fall colours in the foliage past all the fast and furious road construction. Supposedly another week of sun and no rain albeit chilly at night now, frost warnings last two nights. Still wearing tank tops and short sleeves though in the day. Not bad for the second week of October. Nearly two months on the road!!!

So as we trundle back west the search for the almighty open campground is our daily mission. It’s either that or Wal-Mart camping. I wonder if there are casinos nearby?????

TTYL Karen, Kevan and Ryanne the wonder dog!

St John Nova Scotia

St John New Brunswick!!

Well time to twist Ryanne again with a motel for two nights!! Found a $60 a night joint on the side of the hill literally that appreciated Labradors (first choice didn’t)!! Aww now for a nice soft bed to stretch out in. Not!! Two nights later we remembered why we like Rattletrap. She is not stuffy and has a wonderful bed.

Kevan had found a shop with good reviews to have Rattletraps radiator serviced (she deserves the best you know). So as she was at the spa we toured the downtown heritage region looking at the many houses and buildings, some in many stages of restoration.   Found a couple of museums to check out. One was the city police department. So as I chatted with two retired police officers outside, while Ryanne gained her dose of affection, Kevan partook.

The first afternoon we went for a drive around town. No, that isn’t code for we got lost!!  We found not far away were the famous Reversing Falls. So from a vantage point across from the pulp mill you can watch the river out flowing then later in the day the reverse with the Fundy tide pushing against the river with a difference of 14 ft!! This creates rapids and whirlpools, which can be seen. Unfortunately the jet boat rides season was over.

So stocked with fresh groceries, tank full of gas, and a clear day ahead we are off to Fredericton as our next stop on the journey!!

Cheers from refreshed Rattletrap and the Gang!!

Digby

The Land of the Mighty Scallop!!

Tis true! They taste the best fresh from the fisherman. Managed to find the only campground open in the Digby region!! Almost started to look for a Wal-Mart!! A couple nights to recuperate and relax (code words for laundry). Rattletrap made the journey to one of the islands (Long Island) and no we didn’t have any ice tea! She had to cross on a small barge-like ferry at low tide- can you imagine the angle up and down with the wicked tide shifts out here?? It was fun watching the crew (while drinking a cup of coffee) say they put the “big rigs” in the centre of the boat. A wonderful meal was had at a local restaurant. Parked the “rig” in Beautiful Cove for a walk, cup of coffee, talked to one of the locals who explained lobster and herring fishing to us whilst we watched from the sidelines.

While waiting for our 4:00 sailing to St John NB we drove to the Annapolis Valley and to the first capital of Annapolis Royal. Great farmers market (German bakery- nuff said!!) beautiful houses and tons of B&B’s. Off to the great ship for the crossing. Well all we can say is DON’T COMPLAIN ABOUT BCF’S!!! The ship appeared very old, she was, couldn’t tell whom was the crew (no uniforms or safety equipment). Three hours to pass and luckily we met a couple from Ontario to talk to. Felt a little peckish so off to the cafeteria, ok Kevan and I were the only patrons and figured out why when we ate our hamburgers (not so legendary)!!! Whew we made it to St John – now to find a motel in the dark!!

The Adventure continues……

Peggy's Cove to Lunenburg

Peggy’s Cove around to Lunenburg!

We made it to Peggy’s Cove on a dreary soggy day. Took the proverbial picture of the lighthouse and surroundings. Into the gift shop for a coffee and look around and found a lovely watercolour. I had the local artist sign and date it for me! The funny part was when we were leaving a couple of double –length tour buses entered and started to unload copious amounts of seniors!! By the time Rattletrap made it back to the main road we had passed 15!!!! on their way to Peggy’s Cove (its was going to be tight in that little cove).

Our landing for the night was the UNESCO township of Lunenburg (home of Bluenose II). Being the patient people we are and wanting to see the sights we set out walking towards town in what was the drizzling mist. Unfortunately when walking home the RAIN   began. Two soggy Ibbotson’s all the way home to Rattletrap.

Kevan also had the opportunity to fish again at the next campground and was successful for a small bass!!! Yay!!

Needing a couple of days in the same place to catch up on chores (laundry again) and afternoon naps so found a nice campground in Whale Cove which is near Digby.

Halifax at her Best!!

The Wonderful town of Halifax!!

We needed a break from the trail so Halifax was our destination for three nights! Found a nice hotel (The Atlantica) only a short taxi ride (less than $10.00) when parking downtown if you could find it over $15 for a few hours!! Wonderful boardwalk around the harbour (that’s Kevan for they had Timmy’s) with shops, restaurants, tours etc. All devised to extract $ from your wallet. I was good and didn’t buy much as we only have so much room in poor Rattletrap!!

After so many museums I was starting to feel blasé about them so when Kevan said lets go to Pier 21 it’s the immigration museum honestly I think my eyes rolled because we were already going to the Maritime museum as well. Can you guess who was the emotional one leaving later? Yep that’s me!! Reason being that our family (my dad’s side) have little to no knowledge of my grandfather’s roots (it’s a long story that would need copious amounts of either chocolate or liquor) only that he immigrated to Canada at some point. We didn’t even know his mothers name. Well after the tour of the original building that saw thousands of immigrants, downstairs there was a young man in the genealogy room that had within twenty minutes found his immigration papers, ship and its information, family names, and the town that they went too. My great-grandmothers name was Isabella!!!

OK, enough sappy stuff and on to the cool things Halifax had to offer. Great food- ok thinking of seafood? Not!! Gourmet burgers in a funky restaurant!! Irish pub with the best pizza!!

The Maritime museum was great with a special area in regards to the Titanic including artifacts from the ocean floor. The Citadel was also a great stop with the largest amount of historical military artifacts I have ever seen.

There were a few tall ships giving tours as well as a well-known Theodore the Tugboat (cartoon when Jon was small) tied up.

Wonderful weather here, shorts and t-shirts!!!
I think Ryanne is in her glory with an elevator to her suite on the 14th floor, walks through the lobby with her adoring fans, and carpet!!!

Til next time....

Rattletrap’s view of this whole trip.

So these nice people take me out of retirement. I was sitting by the seashore in Victoria, enjoying an odd trip to some beach or ski hill, just enjoying not going anywhere too fast. 25 years and 210,000 kms is a good life and time to put your tires up and enjoy yourself. Maybe take up a hobby, tell stories to the younger motorhomes of what it used to be like to travel to Mexico in the old days and unfortunately leave the odd stain on the pavement (old guys do that ya know).

Then along come these two assholes from Nanaimo who buy me from that nice young lady, who bought me from the nice people who purchased me new. Yea, they did a lot of work on me, shined me up, made me feel young again, but bloody hell they didn’t tell me what they was thinking.

One day they get me up early, load all their stuff in me (along with that bloody dog of theirs who keeps hopping on my passenger seat) and head off on the BC Ferry. Then they take me up every bloody hill in BC, I mean everyone I swear, in the heat no less. Don’t they have any consideration for my age? Guess not.

And then it was across those accursed prairies. Flatter than an old beer and almost as tasteless. And it was hot. Not like warm but like “holly fuck it is hot” type of hot. But I didn’t complain. No Sir, just purred along. Sometimes I got a little warm but I never lost my temper, er temperature.  Don’t these two respect my age?

But going through Ontario was nice. Slower pace, lots of trees, not too many of them damn hills and the temperatures were nice. Kinda liked it there.

But then we went to Quebec. Roads like shit. They rattled every old joint I have loose. And the drivers! Had to keep hitting my brakes hard, sometimes really hard. Pot holes the size of truck tires. And the hills were endlessly steep. I had to wheeze up them in first gear sometimes. It felt like it took forever. What were these two middle aged arseholes thinking?

But the last while it hasn’t been so bad. Back near the ocean again. Temperatures more to my liking, and no hills. Not a one. Well a couple of small ones but not like the Rockies or Ontario. No wonder them hurricanes come in and wreak havoc. No hills to stop them.

And the roads aint too bad except up in the Cabot Trail area. Real narrow like with no shoulder at all. Good thing them kept a sharp eye on their driving as if they wandered off the side of the road it would have torn my axles off. No respect I tell ya for us old motorhomes.

Now the fat one, he was nice to me. Changed my oil, lubricated my squeaky old rear shackles and rotated my tires. Nice guy bit of an ass, but nice guy. Now if he could just learn to drive.

Well I have to go. Gotta rest up for the remainder of the trip. I might wheeze and gasp a bit but I will make it. I hope. What were these two thinking?

Cabot Trail

The Mighty Cabot Trail

We came we conquered, well Rattletrap conquered really. She deserves an award for all the narrow, steep, windy roads. Much like the road to Tofino. Awesome views of the shoreline and farmland. Ok, we have to include the road construction too I guess!!

Stayed the night in Antigonish again (really liked the heated shower floors the first time)! The trek to Halifax the next day with a stop at the Museum of Industry in Pictou. It was great! Lots of artifacts large and small even locomotives.

Kevan was awesome driving into the information centre, which most times are towards the edge of town. Not in Halifax, right downtown on the waterfront. Did I mention I goofed with the pay parking machine and pushed the “day” button for parking only a mere $16.75!! So we made use of the time paid and wandered around the harbour front. Lots of vendors, tours, restaurants to be seen. Lovely weather was had (23C), apparently Nanaimo sucked with all that wind and rain!!

Well off to find a hotel- close, parking for Rattletrap, less than a mortgage payment, must love dogs!!

Settled in Halifax for a few days!
Ryanne and her personal care team!!

PS- There really is a Theodore the Tugboat!!

Holy Tides!!! & Dark Caves

Holy Tidal Waters!!!

Well one of my must do items on our journey was to see the tide change in the Bay of Fundy (this apparent change of minimum 43ft to 53ft). Best seen for comparison at Hopewell Rocks (aka the Flower Pots). All I can say is WOW!! Park pass is good for two days thankfully so you don’t stay for all eight or so hours, and they are only open from 9-5!! The three of us – yes Ryanne was allowed after she read the disclaimer about attitude and poo!! The first day it was high tide and then back on a rising tide that by the time we had taken the guided tour was coming in at a rate of a foot per 15 minutes!!

Then off to the final province on our journey east, Nova Scotia!! Must find lobster dinner!!!!!!!!

Another grand find was the Louisburg fortress. For the history buffs out there it is quite awe inspiring to walk through a community and fortress that has stood since the mid 1700’s.  We completed a tour that took us through many of the buildings in the year 1745 and followed this up with a lunch of the times.

Next on our route was the Miners Museum in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. Very impressive! We had the usual National Film Board of Canada film (remember those from grade school?) only this one needed an interpreter due to the Breton lilt heard. Many original artifacts seen, but the impressive part was the hour-long underground coalmine tour with one of the retired miners!! Needed a chiropractor later due to the low ceilings of the mine (4ft in places) but gave you a taste of what life was for 50 cents a day.

We ended our day in Baddeck, Nova Scotia after seeing the Alexander Graham Bell Museum (gee this National park pass is paying for itself well) and Kevan is still limited to two museums a day!! Oh my gosh not only did he invent the telephone but also built the first power aircraft, hydrofoil boats, worked with the deaf, and the list goes on and on!!

Heading up the Cabot Trail in search of sun and warmer weather tomorrow!!

Til next entry, heading up a winding road

Travelling companions.

We have picked up a new travelling companion: a rubber ducky in the likeness of a fisherman. Appropriate don’t you think?

We have christened him “Duck Mullins” after my fishing and hunting buddy Dennis “Doc” Mullins in Nanaimo.

He is now glued to the dashboard beside our “hula girl” (so far unnamed but that could change in the future) that Karen bought me for father’s day. She had to special order it off the Web and have it delivered because for some reason there is a shortage of “hula girls” available for sale in Nanaimo. Take not Nanaimo merchants!

We use our hula girl as an indication of how bad the roads are. If she is nice and relaxed, just sitting there looking all Hawaiian, then the roads are good, level and not full of pot holes or patches. If she is swinging back and forth with a good rhythm then the road are not in great shape, but not horrible. Sort of like the old Island highway. If she is shaking her booty like a Latino lap dancer then the road is shit. This is what most of Saskatchewan and the Gaspe Peninsula roads were like.  If we didn’t have rattle before these roads would have installed them for us!

Sackville

Where the hell is Sackville and why on earth did we go there?

Well I saw a full page advertisement for the Sackville Fall Fair in a newspaper. It had pretty pictures of smiling faces attending the large looking farmers market, a Midway, numerous other displays and events. Sounds so, well so, rural East Coast.

So we went.

The first clue that this may not be what the advertisement was selling is when we checked with the local tourist information place, a newer expansive building with a view of the Trans Canada Highway, and they told us, nicely, not to bother with the local campground. It was shit. They owner has “branched out” into car repair and auto wrecking. But we could park in their parking lot after hours even if the sign says we cant. No one would/should bother us. Us in little old, Rattletrap.

The second clue was when the nice lady a the tourist information place mentioned the book sale at the local church. Not once but twice. Like it was the highlight of the weekend.

This being Friday afternoon we went for a long walk into town through their nationally recognised waterfowl refuge. Very nice. No actually it was.

Town is small with a two block long main street. This was the street noted in the Fall Fair advertisement as being the location of the opening ceremonies, the dance hall, battle of he bands and the farmers market on Saturday.  We were starting to get a bit concerned about the size and scope of this whole Fall Fair thing.

So nice dinner out at a very good local restaurant was followed by “what do we do now”. So we went to see the opening ceremonies. Us and about 20 other people of whom 18 were related to the mayor. Reminded me of a scene from the movie “Roxanne” where the mayor is giving the opening speech to the township and introducing a cow as their mascot. Different location but same amount of people. Hum.

I convinced Karen to go and see the local University football game. We had to do something as we did not technically have a campground site and besides without WIFI we did not have Netflix. It was this or sit and talk to each other. Fuck that, lets go to a football game.

Well we had a blast. We froze our asses off (outside game with a strong wind blowing), watched the fireworks from the grandstands and cheered on the local team. After the game we headed back over to the tourist information parking lot and waited for someone to kick us out. The RCMP came by for a look just after we went to bed but obviously felt sorry for us because we drove Rattletrap all the way from BC to New Brunswick. Anyone that crazy the police officer did not want to confront without backup and they were probably still at the University looking for a date after the football game.

Next day we went to the farmers market. We are not sure where they got the crowds and all the vendors for the photo used in the advertisement but lets just say it did not live up to our expectations. That said the carrots we bought there were delicious.

Onto the actual fall fair. It was great. There were corn mazes, tractor displays, old engines that were used to power farm equipment and a loggers sport demonstration. Half the town turned out meaning it was busy but not packed with people and enough to keep everything interesting. And for $10 we had the best pulled pork sandwiches we have ever had. We actually spent most of the day before heading off to see the Bay of Fundy.

Oh and we didn’t make to the book sale. We ended up not having time.

The moral to the story is that sometime you have to go out of your way to find interesting, fun things to do. Sometimes they are not great and splendorous like a Disney event but a bit more “down home”. Maybe we should do this more often at home?

PEI

The Other Island!!

We both have thoroughly enjoyed our stay on PEI!! From the touristy stuff such as Cavendish (Anne of Green Gables), to the many lighthouses- that are still in service I might add. We have ventured from east to west then north to south and back again. A note to future adventurers the GPS unit doesn’t always work in partnership with the roadmaps given to tourists (just sayin to stop potential arguments- not that this happened or anything!!)

From the KOA in Cavendish, to the nearly deserted provincial park in Mill River, to two nights in Charlottetown (Ryanne hated this motel room for some doggie reason) and finally our last night at Ben’s Lake-, which was hard to find as its actual name, is something else pond!!

We have partaken in live theatre to actual fishing (and caught some huge fish), ok so its
a private stocked lake- but FINALLY SOME FISHING!!!!!!

The landscape changes are amazing! From fields of potatoes, blueberries, corn and cranberries to the cattle and even vineyards.

The people are friendly everywhere we have stopped. Charlottetown is beautiful and reminds me of Victoria- an easy walk to many shops and historical places.

Kevan had the best ever fish-n-chips!! Yes Shawn east coast cod tastes better!! It’s easy to see how you could spend a couple weeks to a month here in summer when more activities are running.

No regrets, although still grumbling about the Miramichi fiasco !!

Well off tomorrow back to New Brunswick to a town called Sackville as they are having a huge fall fair over the weekend. Since we are in the neighbourhood thought it was worth checking out!!

Still cruising!!

Miramichi Part Two!!

Miramichi Part Two!!

Well mother nature doesn’t give a $^&*)&^$# what your vacation plans are and how long you have been planning them! Yes the rain caught up with us. Fishing plans that were in place with the guide and hotel etc came crashing to an end when the hotel clerk told us at check in that the fishing had been cancelled. Apparently the river had risen 3ft in the last two days and was now murky and unsafe. Nice!!  Not!!  Well plan B- one night in hotel, awesome dinner at the local Irish pub, TV (still nothing on) then continue on our journey east. Ryanne thought that the reception staff at the hotel was great! She could come into the hotel and get a Scooby snack anytime along with much attention. Yet at bedtime she wanted back into the motor home!!

Rattletrap had been asking for an oil change so off to Moncton to find a garage for her! She had the attention of three nice lads all younger than she is for just under an hour, fascinated that we had made it this far!!

The plan had been to stay at the Moncton casino, but we couldn’t find it easily so Kevan kept driving and lo and behold we were on the Confederation Bridge!! Welcome to the next province of PEI!!

Further down the road!!

Miramichi Part One!!

Miramichi

Well we are here in Miramichi for FISHING!!!!  Info centre (they are invaluable) check, local fishing/hunting store –are there any fish? -check, accommodation/fishing package-check. Just have to wait until Sunday to fish, as the guides are busy until then –good sign.

Now we wait in the Miramichi campground, Kevan is being dive-bombed by the mosies every time he goes outside and does he ever react (needs vat of after-bite and an antihistamine due to some of the bites are approx quarter-sized. I’m apparently not as appetizing (only have two bites).

Once again thunderstorms performed for us with the bonus of finding wet blankets this am and thus the search for the leak began in the still pouring rain!! Kevan and his trusty box of “bodger-fixy stuff” to the rescue!! After a short period of time, viola no leak but now putting on gloves to slather the after-bite on him!!

Its reading and nap day with a “Martha Stewart moment” of homemade chip cookies. Will go discover more of the town and apparent farmers market tomorrow.

Gaspe Peninsula

The Mighty Gaspe Peninsula!!

Well we made it finally to the Gaspe!! The trees are just starting to turn for fall. Kevan is tired of French road signs and deciphering them. It just a big challenge I see.

My job is to retrieve coffee from Timmys/McD’s, or the odd gas station. That will be a café noir grande se vous plais? Always back that up with merci, and if screwing things up –pardon!! Forget pronouncing doughnut in French I just point and smile and show the peace sign!!

Its very pretty scenery here and we have repeated the many mighty hills (some 14% grade). The only difference between here and Barkerville is about 3000ft. Rattletrap did just fine only one or two hills we almost lashed Ryanne to the front bumper!!

Will be off to see the Jacques Cartier museum I think in the morning then off towards the border of New Brunswick- as Kevan says English road signs again hurray!!!

Quebec Adventures!!

Parlez vous anglais??!!

Well yes we have made it to Quebec City at last! I have been waiting for this time most anxiously!! Well Kevan did awesome navigating the VERY NARROW HIGHWAYS and not just side streets. Very exciting when you are in between to “b-trains” on the overpass and a gust of wind hits!!!  No scars I promise on Rattletrap. Rattletrap will have a few days to recover while we play tourist in Quebec!!!

Wonderful service of a tour bus collecting us at the campground and dropping off in the middle of Old Quebec city, and voila a few hours later a pickup and they drive through the crazy traffic.

Beautiful city and vast amounts of history here. Walked on the “the plains of Abraham”, I’ll let you look that up!! Views from both the Citadel and the Chateau Frontanac were amazing. It truly was a flashback to France for me. I can only imagine what the streets would look like in the snow (and minus 30).

Leslie you would be proud I went shopping in many of the boutiques here. You would need hours to check out all of them, from local crafts and textiles to artists in the streets.

Another adventure was grocery shopping, honest it was fun! Trying to interpret French and speak to shoppers and staff alike, then take a taxi back to campground!!

Au revoir!!

Ottawa and the Freeways!!

Holy Freeway!!

Well Karen managed to drive Rattletrap in Ottawa, I don’t know who was more nervous Karen driving (I did great I might add) or the navigator Kevan (praying Karen wouldn’t be involved in any MVC’s)?? That being said we found the campground that had come with good reviews- perhaps they should have been dated 1980-90’s we guess. The first clue was the derelict water slides or the over run - tennis courts? Anyway only booked for two nights and they have a pool! Did I tell you we could only use it certain days of the week and certain hours in those days!!!

Anyway rented a set of wheels and made it downtown. The view from the Peace Tower in the Parliament building is spectacular. Most impressed with the War Memorial on Vimy Lane though!!

To further our historical interlude we attended Fort Henry in Kingston the next day. Toured around with both guide and on our own.

Yes another KOA again next to the endless cornfields!!!

KOA Kamping!!

Hola Kampers!!!

Well I see a theme lately and it KOA camping!! Yes I used to laugh at such things as not really camping but now in my old age a HOT shower, Wifi, and hook-ups to keep the fridge cold are really nice. Honestly we have not gone to the dark side completely we will still free camp when possible, as the fishing is better and no rules other than our own!!

We are in the KOA campground in Sturgeon Falls Ontario tonight. We have stayed at the KOA in Thunder Bay and Wawa (land of the mighty goose) that didn’t seem that mighty up close personally.

Apparently in Thunder Bay on August 30th it was Halloween!! See the pictures to prove it. A little noisy with hyped up kids but the pool was empty!!

The weather is finally cooler and of course wetter. Last nights monsoon pelted us hard. Hard enough that just before bed (thank god) Karen realized the back window was open and the bedding was wet. Laundry time!!!!!!

Ryanne was having a mopey day I think cause she was leaning on our shoulders whilst we drove- even Kevan’s!!!!
Wonderful views seen today of Lake Superior and Huron, not just homework in grade school they do exist!!

Well off to plan Ottawa accommodations and activities. Kevan has promised only on museum per day (we will see)!!

Ryanne’s point of view.

They said “lets go for a car ride” and we have been going for car rides everyday. For lots of days. And they take me for walks where there are all these new smells I have to stop and smell. And I meet new people who rub my head and say I am pretty for my age. Fuckers.

In the mornings after Kevan takes me for a walk so that I can relive myself. Every morning I stop, take a crap, look up at Kevan with my soft Labrador eyes and think “ok fat man, go and pick it up in that little plastic bag, and lets get going as I want breakfast”.

I sneak into the front of the motorhome and sleep on Karen’s seat. This way I can keep an eye on what is going on and I can shed my hair so that she gets it all on her clothes. I sleep there at nights sometimes as well, but not if I am snoring: my snoring keeps me awake. So when I snore I sleep in the hallway of the motorhome where they put my mat and blanket that way it keeps Kevan awake.

My walking buddy bought us a Tim Horton's card before we left to make sure that Kevan gets his caffeine and I get my Timbits. It seems pretty much everyday we get Timbits. Kevan is happier when he has coffee. Thanks Mark!

Gotta go. Dinner is ready and I have to eat it quickly so that I can mooch some people food from Karen. Then Kevan has to take me for a walk and pickup my crap.

Woof Woof

Ryanne.

Sask to Souris

Kevan’s version:

Saskatchewan sucks. The weather is fucking 35c and the campground we found at Estevan was shit. No showers, flies and mosquitoes the size of small birds and $40 a night. It was that or the Wal-Mart parking lot; if they had one. There is a big oil and gas boom on and the campgrounds are full of workers along with most of the motel/hotels.

But we suffered through, got up at daylight and got the hell out of there.
And the roads sucked. I have driven/ridden better roads in Mexico than I did is Sask. Now granted they did warn us with a sign that said the road was not well maintained but holly fuck some of the potholes would swallow the tire off of a semi!

Luckily I should not have to return ever again to southern Sask and if I do it will be with a rental car.

The offset is that all the people we met were very pleasant and all said yes it was unseasonably hot. Yes low to mid 30c is hot. And even hotter in an old Toyota with no air conditioning. Note to anyone looking to come to the prairies: make sure your air conditioning works !

Karen’s addendum: It’s all true and yet I got to go back to my families home town of yes: Big Beaver Sask!! Have you finished laughing yet? Stopped for lunch at the general store with 10 min to spare, as it is only open from 9-12 on Wed. Through the Badlands and onward to Manitoba towards another hot day!!

Nakusp 2013

Nakusp 2013

Sorry for the tardiness lack of Wifi!!

Well what a time!! Met interesting people from all over the world that were on their own adventures.  Across Canada you say- we are going across Mongolia on motorbikes!! Great times and many more ideas for future travel, I wonder how many leaves of absence I can get!!??

Finally toured the mighty Moye (sternwheeler) in Kaslo, BC after a night of epic wind/thunder/lightening storms!! The nasty weather is still following us; wish it were warmer-careful what you wish for!!
We landed in Gull Lake Alberta via Sparwood, BC and the mighty truck!!

Kevan’s version:

I got to spend the weekend end with 270 of my best riding friends. This was a record year for attendance at HU Nakusp!

The highlights were seeing Grant and Susan Johnston and having dinner with them on Wednesday night (actually Karen cooked in Rattletrap) along with Mark and Nevil. Actually Nevil was still working off the hang over from the night before was we killed of the last of my Tequila.

The night afterward we initiated a new Horizons Unlimited ritual: HUritas. That is Horizons Unlimited margaritas made and served in the campsite. Thank you Miles!

Although the weekend is stressful making sure the presentations all come off on time and I don’t put my big foot in my mouth while acting as MC I really enjoy the event.

Barkerville and Sheridan Lake

Gold Mines and Great Theatre!!

Yes we made it to Barkerville! A full day of activities including a wonderful live theatre shows in the evening. Light show was included later that night with torrential thunderstorms!! Rattletrap didn’t appreciate the 9% grades on the hills though!

Stayed in Sheridan Lake for a night to visit Kevan’s family (uncles, aunts and cousins) a family reunion of sorts!! No fishing due to the 40-50km/hr winds and 2-3 foot waves alas Margaritas were had instead!!

Onward ho to Nakusp with a short stop for new muffler piece in Vernon and overnight stay in Lumby.

Holly cob chucking Batman !!

So after a couple of blistering days of traveling up country through the heartland of BC, better known as the Fraser Canyon and the Caribou district we ended up at our good friends Ian and Heather’s place in Burns Lake.

Ian on a recent trip down to Chilliwack returned with 150 pound of fresh corn. He asked for a “little help” with preparing it for the freezer. Karen and I being the volunteering type thought sure, how bad can it be to shuck 150 pounds of corn. What we didn’t think to ask was how he was preparing it for the freezer.

In the end we ended up shucking, blanching, ice chilling, de-kernelling (if that is really a word) and then packaging into freezer bags. 30 bags worth. About 3 hours of hot, steamy work over a hot stove. Lots of fun with good friends.

For those motorhead friends a little update on Rattle Trap. Only thing to break so far is the entrance step; Karen did that J. We got 19 MPG coming up the Caribou. Not bad for a 15 year old motorhome !

We are off to Barkerville later this week then off to Nakusp for the Horizons Unlimited meeting.

Till next time.

The Adventure of “Rattletrap”

As of August 2013 we are off on our next adventure. This time though instead of taking motorcycles to some strange place – does the Arctic Circle and Central America seem strange because it used to for us – we are taking a motor home and driving across Canada. And we are bringing the dog !

We decided that instead of heading off to a foreign country or continent that we should really get a chance to see our country first. So Karen spoke to her superiors at VIHA and ended up with nearly 3 months off work this fall. I think they felt guilty for her not getting her holidays in 2012 and wanted to make it up to her.

But instead of doing the normal thing and buying a new or late model RV we purchased a 1988 Toyota motor home. It is small enough to park in a regular parking stall, narrow enough to navigate city streets and just big enough for the 3 of us. It is not what we started off looking to purchase for the trip but in the end we are really pleased with it.

She has been christened, if that is the appropriate term, “Rattletrap”. As any of you who have owned motor homes know they make all kinds of noise from the appliances, wind, personal items stored on board and try as you might you just never seem to get all of them quite at the same time. Therefore we call it “Rattletrap” due to the din she makes when we drive her.

So we leave on August 12 to see friends in Burns Lake, then off to Nakusp for the annual Horizons Unlimited event, then east to Edmonton to see Karen’s brother. After that we will head east to Newfoundland and home again by mid November. There are really no time lines, no reservations other than we have to be at the Miramichi River New Brunswick prior to October 15 because that is when the Atlantic salmon fishing season ends. We have been reviewing the various provincial travel sites, maps etc and have a rough idea of where we are going but as I believe that too much planning ruins a trip we are letting things work themselves out as we go.

We are looking forward to seeing Quebec and the Maritimes in their fall colours and spending time in Ottawa and Quebec City. We are trying to avoid the larger cities like Toronto and Montreal as much as possible just due to their size, complexities and the fact that we are not big city people.

Also we are trying to fish in each province. So if you know a favourite fishing place or someone along the route who might be able to show us a good spot, please let us know.

Keep an eye here on the blog for stories and photos.

Cheers

Another couple of fine days in Phoenix.

We went to the Mesa Swapmeet. For those of us who used to go to the swap meet at the old drive in theatre let me tell you this is nothing like it.

It is 55 achres, 1600  boths covering from cheap shit you would find in a Dollar store to higher end southwestern furniture, rugs, painting etc. Although I am not a shopper I still bought a bunch of stuff to bring home.

Just back from a very cool old ghost town near Apache Junction. We went on a mine tour, a walk through the old town, Karen got spooked looking at the reptile farm and we toured a bordello.

Gotta love Phoenix !

Have a look at the photo share as we added some more photos to it

Having fun in the sun in Arizona

Arizona

We are here in Gold Canyon Arisona visiting our good friends Dale and Rosi. They have a winter home down here and were gratious enough to envite us down for a visit to get away from the cold and wet back home.

So far we have visited a local artizans town, downtown Scotsdale (very cool) saw a middle aged man act like an asshole and get arrested by 8 cops, and been to Boot Hill in Tombstone.

Here are a few photos to tell the story:
